Breast lifts can result in wide or raised scars, altered nipple sensation, asymmetry in breasts, and enlarged areolas. Mastopexy revision corrects problems from previous breast lifts. Scars associated with the formal mastopexy ,or vertical lift, can be very unpredictable. Patients must have realistic expectations when undergoing any form of mastopexy or breast reduction surgery. Scarring can never be predictable. There is the possibility of a failed breast lift, excessive asymmetry, or justifiable dissatisfaction due surgeon error. Breast lift revisions occur with an abnormal amount of asymmetry, a failed lift, a complication such as hematoma or seroma appears, an internal suture or suspension breaks, or other situations of this nature. When there are scar problems, therapies such as silicone sheeting and steroid injections might help. All surgery has the potential for complications. A surgeon should consider the genetic predisposition of a patient to form scars when planning the breast implant technique. In some patients, scars may be a different color than the surrounding skin. Some patients want scar revision surgery to correct a poor scar. The nerve supplies from the spinal cord travel around the back of the body and to the nipple and areola complex. The doctor may injure the nerve supply to the breast or nipple areola complex. Most damage is typically temporary, but permanent or partial loss of nipple and skin sensation may occur. Patients may experience diminished sensitivity of the nipples and the skin of the breast.
